Homestead Hack: Travel Bag Organization

by Tammy Taylor

So, y’all already know that RancherMan & I took a little road trip recently to central Texas to enjoy the 2-day Mother Earth News Fair.  It’s the first time we’ve ever been able to attend and let me tell ya it was AWESOME!  But while I was packing my bag in preparation for our trip I was reminded of something that I do to help keep my things organized inside my luggage.  Check out this Homestead (travel) Hack – Oh man, you’re not gonna believe this!

Several years ago when RancherMan & I were in west Texas visiting relatives, we all went out garage-saleing together.   (an activity we really enjoy, especially with these relatives!)  Aaaaaaanyway I stumbled upon this obnoxiously large pill box with 7 compartments.  It was being sold for the low-low price of just $0.10!  So I snapped it up, knowing just what I would do with it.  We won’t talk about the weird looks I got from my fam, who were both puzzled by my smugness over my find.  LOL

When we got home I washed the pill box up and placed it in our bathroom vanity drawer to wait for our next travel date.  The next time we planned a road trip and brought out the luggage & I fetched my obnoxiously-large pill box and got busy.  I put a few pairs of earrings in a few of the compartments, some hair clips in another, an anklet in yet another and some hair ties in another.  Since the compartments are semi-see through I can easily flip open the lid of the compartment I want to fetch the item I’m after.  No fuss, no muss.  (what IS muss anyway??)

That’s a great idea! I use one of those flannel shoe cleaning mits I picked up at a hotel. Didn’t clean my shoes with it, so I put my jewelry in it.

I also went to the Mother Earth Fair….It was fantastic – my sisters and I had a great time. I certainly hope they continue to have these events in Texas.

Oh man, this is right up my alley – simply because crafting, as ColleenB said, can have a ton of little things you don’t want to lose (for me, it’s knitting, so stitch markers and tapestry needles)! I have my earrings and such in a tin I got a few years back that was for Pokemon cards (because, uh, I’m still a kid at heart!) and it works great. For travel, though, I normally just throw that kind of thing in a ziploc. It may get messed up, but I would only have a few hair ties and maybe a pair of earrings, so no harm, no foul, for the most part!

Love the Pokemon tin Jessica – LOL. I typically threw my hair ties and various things in ziplocs too and placed the ziploc in my toiletry bag. It certainly worked fine, but I like the simplicity of this big honkin’ pill box even better, it sits neatly on the vanity at the hotel & it’s easier for me to retrieve those items since it keeps each pair of earrings separate, etc. ~TMH~

Them little bill boxes sure do come in handy, plus they take up very little space. Besides using for jewelry they are also great for storing small craft supplies; like brads; special cake decorating tips; make for great watercolor holders; sewing bobbins; to save cabinet space u can store candy sprinkles in them, saves from storing a large jar with very little sprinkles in it. Decorate and they make cute little candy holders (especially for the little kids) Storing tiny craft beads; Even the round prescription containers are useful in many ways.

Yeah they do Colleen. I’ve never seen these huge pill boxes before but because it was so large I was able to include barrettes and hair clips in it. The little case sat neatly on the vanity at the hotel and it was always a snap to to be able to see & easily access the compartment I needed. Perfect! ~TMH~

The jewelery/acessories use is great, however the bobbin storage idea is also a good one. I have been trying to find something to store them in. Thanks to both of you!

Colleen always comes up with handy-dandy ideas Suzy! I’m brand spankin’ new to sewing so I may use her tip with some of the other pill boxes I have laying around… ~TMH~
