Life on the ranch is always busy. I’ve written before about how pointless it is to wonder what’s on the agenda today, the day has a way of filling up all by itself! When I was employed in the corporate world I used to get frustrated that my days seemed to blur together – I was being pulled in so many directions that I couldn’t enjoy any of it. At that time I started making a conscious effort to stop and smell the roses. Funny that even if you live in the most beautiful place on earth doing something for a living that speaks to your heart and soul, you still have to make a purposeful effort to slow-er-down sometimes and enjoy life around you. Here are some things making me smile:
I love the subtle hints of spring I’m seeing now. After the long cold season, that first burst of life from the trees is something I look forward to every year. And it’s really hard to beat those blazing blue Texas skies!
We had a beautiful heifer calf born recently. Since this is an A.I.-produced calf so much work and effort goes into this outcome for almost a year prior to her actual birth, so her arrival is intensely meaningful to me. Oh my gosh it’s fun to watch this pretty girl bouncing and jumping in the pastures. She’s healthy and happy and watching her enjoy life is so pleasing to me.
We’ve struggled through a couple of years of severe drought here in Texas. When you run a cattle ranch you’re actually growing GRASS for a living. It’s 100% dependent on the weather and comes with lots of worry, especially when dealing with weather that will NOT cooperate. We’ve been blessed with several rains and even a couple of snows over the last few months and the green we finally see popping from the winter rye we planted last fall makes me smile.
And there’s the joy of living in a small town. Home is where your heart is – and my heart is certainly in Wolfe City, Texas!
And of course there’s one more thing that never fails to bring a smile to my face: my business partner, my best friend, my soul mate. We’re in this ranching thing together, and there’s absolutely nowhere else we’d rather be!
These are just a few of the things that are meaningful and beautiful to me, but beauty is in everyone’s world no matter where you call home. What beautiful things are you enjoying now?
