Less Landfill-Bound TRASH When Dining Out

by Tammy Taylor~

Y’all remember last year I went to the Mother Earth New Fair in Belton?  RancherMan & I stayed at a hotel that offers a free hot breakfast.  We don’t often eat a formal breakfast here on the ranch so it’s a treat for us when we travel.  But although I fought landfill-bound waste in the hotel room like a ninja last year, I was distressed over the waste created at breakfast.  I vowed to work on a solution to the dining trash by fair time the following year.  (if you didn’t read last year’s revelations you can read that post here)

Whelp, the fair this year has come & gone and I’m happy to say I was able to significantly reduce the landfill-bound waste again.  And many of  these same solutions can offer less trash at the more local dining establishments too.  If you’ll remember, at last year’s fair I had breakfast twice and each time I produced about this much trash for only 15-20 minutes at the table. Check out what I did differently.

A Fun Trip To Minneapolis, Minnesota

by Tammy Taylor~

Like my other siblings & myself, my brother has lived in Texas almost all his life.  But when he married MST3K star Mary Jo Pehl (aka: Pearl Forrester) several years ago they lived in Austin for a short while, then moved waaaaay up north to Minneapolis Minnesota.  Wow, now that’s a long way away for a Texas gal to visit – it’s a 14-hour drive!  So each time they asked we promised we’d look into a visit soon but ranch duties, calving issues, garden chores, community commitments, etc. just kept us from being able to carve out enough time to be away from the ranch.  But RancherMan stumbled upon a ‘Wanna Get Away’ fair on SW Airlines that made it affordable for us to fly out.  Less time away from the ranch – let’s DO IT!  First we had to drive into Big D to catch a flight…

Hitting the Road: Amarillo, Texas

by Tammy Taylor~

RancherMan & I love our home in our Northeast Texas paradise.  But sometimes a road trip is in order and we love to travel to West Texas to visit our favorite aunt and uncle. Recently we had just the opportunity after viewing our calendars and seeing it’s about to get super busy at the Taylor Household.  So we prepared our animals for our brief absence and headed west for a weekend of fun in Amarillo, Texas.

We recently took a road trip to Amarillo, Texas to visit famil. Come see what a great time we had including the Amarillo Little Theater #TaylorMadeHomestead

Lower-Waste Hotel Stays When Traveling

by Tammy Taylor~

Recently RancherMan & I traveled to a city about 4 hours away from our ranch so that we could attend the 2-day Mother Earth News Fair.  I’d never been to their fair before and OH MY what a great time we had!!  But since it was a two day seminar and because it was an 8-hour round trip, we decided to get a hotel room close to our destination for the weekend.  Now we prefer Comfort Inn Suites because we’ve found the quality at their hotels is pretty consistent (sadly not the case this time…) and we like the complimentary hot & hearty breakfast that their chain of hotel offers.  Although hotel stays can be notoriously wasteful, there are a few ways RancherMan & I have easily & comfortably reduced some of the waste that would typically be produced by a hotel stay.

Homestead Hack: Travel Bag Organization

by Tammy Taylor

So, y’all already know that RancherMan & I took a little road trip recently to central Texas to enjoy the 2-day Mother Earth News Fair.  It’s the first time we’ve ever been able to attend and let me tell ya it was AWESOME!  But while I was packing my bag in preparation for our trip I was reminded of something that I do to help keep my things organized inside my luggage.  Check out this Homestead (travel) Hack – Oh man, you’re not gonna believe this!

Mother Earth News Fair 2016 – Belton, Texas

by Tammy Taylor~

A couple of months ago I was scanning my newsfeed and suddenly I stopped cold.  What do I see before my eyes? Could it be?  YES – the Mother Earth News Fair was coming to Texas!  I’d never been able to attend the MEN Fair before since I was under the mistaken impression that it was always held in the same location, far away from our ranch.  Imagine my utter glee at seeing that they hold fairs all around the US and now it was coming to central Texas, certainly within driving distance for RancherMan and me!  So we excitedly made plans to attend the two-day event.

Food Safety: Keeping Hot Covered Dishes HOT!

~ by Tammy Taylor ~

So you say you’re planning on skipping over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house for the holidays?  And of course as is tradition, each family is bringing their favorite dish to share at the big feast.  That’s awesome, what a wonderful time you’ll have – warm memories filled with fun, family and good food! But it’s an hour’s drive to grandma’s house and you want to arrive early enough to visit with all your cousins before you eat.  You know grandma’s kitchen is small & that she’s already got her oven filled to the brim with her mammoth-sized ham and turkey, so how are you going to keep your dish hot, or even heat it up before it’s time to sit down for the big meal?  We’re often faced with that situation as well, here’s what we do:

FOOD SAFETY IS IMPORTANT: How do you keep your casserole HOT when bringing a covered dish to a meal? See what we do. #TaylorMadeHomestead

Working On The Road: My Rolling Office

by Tammy Taylor

I’m a full-time rancher but I’m also a full-time blogger.  (How does she do it, folks??  LOL)  Recently RancherMan & I were planning a road trip 7 hour away and I knew we would be away from the ranch for a week and a half.  I hated to leave my blog work at home getting further & further behind until I returned, but what’s a girl to do?  Well luckily I’m married to my handsome I.T. guy, and what a wonderful electronic age we live in!  RancherMan has me covered with a pretty sweet setup that allows me to take my computer on the road and work in the car instead of staring blankly out the window for hours on end worried about the work piling up at home.  Wanna see my on-the-road office?

An inexpensive setup that allows me to take my computer on the road and work in the car during road trips. Want to see my portable office? #TaylorMadeHomestead

FUN Trip To Red River, New Mexico

by Tammy Taylor

There nestled in the Red River Valley in Northern New Mexico is a quaint little town simply called Red River.  It’s close to Angel Fire & Taos ski resorts and is probably better known for its small skiing facilities in the winter.  But the truth is I much prefer to be there in the summer, it’s absolutely beautiful!  As a matter of fact Red River is where RancherMan & I spent our (summertime) honeymoon when we got married – he loves it as much as I do.  So periodically we’ll take a road trip and spend a couple of days there.  Luckily an opportunity came up to do just that recently.
