Homestead Hack: Peace Of Mind Before A Trip

by Tammy Taylor~

Don’t you just hate when you leave for the weekend and worry that you’ve forgotten something? Me too!  Our trips are often during a weekend but sometimes the duration is a week or so.  Clouds of doubt circle my head:  “Did we unplug the coffee pot?  What about the garden pump, did we turn it off?  Uuug, I forgot to take the compost outside before we left!”

We don’t travel often but every time we do I feel that familiar “what did we forget” dread, I know most of you are the same. But no more!  Check out today’s easy homestead hack, y’all.

Using My Handmade Basket When Traveling

by Tammy Taylor~

I wrote recently about a basket.  A handmade basket.  A beautiful basket.  MY basket.  You see, I’d wanted an open-top basket for a long time and I was really trying to find one at a thrift store.  Not only would it be less expensive but I wanted it to be used instead of new.  I always prefer to buy used whenever possible.  It’s just an environmental thing for me.

But for months I was patient and searched for one.  Alas, a suitable basket was nowhere to be found.  Then one fateful day as RancherMan & I were strolling through an outdoor fair I saw her.  Oh she was a beauty!  A handmade woven basket with leather handles.  Deep sage greens and vibrant pink accents.  “How much?” I timidly asked.  “Forty Dollars” came the reply.

Wow.  Forty dollars?  That’s more than I was planning on spending.  But oh how I loved her!  And it was certainly worth that much, having been sturdily made.  And I love to support artists whenever possible.  So I bought that beautiful basket with the bright pink accents, hoping I’d use it as much as I thought I would.  And I’m pleased to say I have!

Handmade Basket Used When Traveling. I love my handmade basket but will I use it as much as I think I would? Recently we took a traveling day-trip & it was used once again #TaylorMadeHomestead

5 Ways a Smart Phone Helps on the Homestead

by Tammy Taylor~

Although we now enjoy smart phone capabilities, RancherMan & I resisted getting one for quite a long time.  We just couldn’t justify the cost of it, including the increased cost for data usage.  We kept saying to ourselves “I only need a phone for calls, not for text or surfing the net!”  Everyone told us once we did get a smart phone we’d wonder how we ever got along without it.  But still we resisted.  For years!  Then it happened, my brother was upgrading and he gave us his old iPhone 3GS.  Well, if the phone is FREE, maybe we should check it out & see what all the buzz is about.

Yeah, they were right – several years down the road and we’re certainly wondering how we ever got by without it!  But it’s not just for fun or convenience reasons, there are several ways having a smart phone has been really helpful on the homestead.

A Smart Phone is certainly convenient, but here are 5 ways they're extremely helpful on the homestead too! #TaylorMadeHomestead

Less Landfill-Bound TRASH When Dining Out

by Tammy Taylor~

Y’all remember last year I went to the Mother Earth New Fair in Belton?  RancherMan & I stayed at a hotel that offers a free hot breakfast.  We don’t often eat a formal breakfast here on the ranch so it’s a treat for us when we travel.  But although I fought landfill-bound waste in the hotel room like a ninja last year, I was distressed over the waste created at breakfast.  I vowed to work on a solution to the dining trash by fair time the following year.  (if you didn’t read last year’s revelations you can read that post here)

Whelp, the fair this year has come & gone and I’m happy to say I was able to significantly reduce the landfill-bound waste again.  And many of  these same solutions can offer less trash at the more local dining establishments too.  If you’ll remember, at last year’s fair I had breakfast twice and each time I produced about this much trash for only 15-20 minutes at the table. Check out what I did differently.

5 Frugal Things We Did To Save Money This Week

RancherMan & I are self employed.  As any self-employed person knows, the toils are more meaningful but c’mon it’s true – the time requirement is much higher & the income is much less.  We’re both very frugal minded though, and that helps bunches.  We’re mindful of ways to save money (and even more importantly ways not to waste money).  Having this mindset allows us to live & work right here living a life that speaks to our hearts because our income requirement stays low. It’s just a state of mind, y’all!  Come see 5 Frugal Things we did this week to save money.

Come see 5 Frugal Things (and even MORE) that we did at the Taylor Household this week to save money. #TaylorMadeHomestead

A Fun Trip To Minneapolis, Minnesota

by Tammy Taylor~

Like my other siblings & myself, my brother has lived in Texas almost all his life.  But when he married MST3K star Mary Jo Pehl (aka: Pearl Forrester) several years ago they lived in Austin for a short while, then moved waaaaay up north to Minneapolis Minnesota.  Wow, now that’s a long way away for a Texas gal to visit – it’s a 14-hour drive!  So each time they asked we promised we’d look into a visit soon but ranch duties, calving issues, garden chores, community commitments, etc. just kept us from being able to carve out enough time to be away from the ranch.  But RancherMan stumbled upon a ‘Wanna Get Away’ fair on SW Airlines that made it affordable for us to fly out.  Less time away from the ranch – let’s DO IT!  First we had to drive into Big D to catch a flight…

Hitting the Road: Amarillo, Texas

by Tammy Taylor~

RancherMan & I love our home in our Northeast Texas paradise.  But sometimes a road trip is in order and we love to travel to West Texas to visit our favorite aunt and uncle. Recently we had just the opportunity after viewing our calendars and seeing it’s about to get super busy at the Taylor Household.  So we prepared our animals for our brief absence and headed west for a weekend of fun in Amarillo, Texas.

Lower-Waste Hotel Stays When Traveling

by Tammy Taylor~

Recently RancherMan & I traveled to a city about 4 hours away from our ranch so that we could attend the 2-day Mother Earth News Fair.  I’d never been to their fair before and OH MY what a great time we had!!  But since it was a two day seminar and because it was an 8-hour round trip, we decided to get a hotel room close to our destination for the weekend.  Now we prefer Comfort Inn Suites because we’ve found the quality at their hotels is pretty consistent (sadly not the case this time…) and we like the complimentary hot & hearty breakfast that their chain of hotel offers.  Although hotel stays can be notoriously wasteful, there are a few ways RancherMan & I have easily & comfortably reduced some of the waste that would typically be produced by a hotel stay.

Mother Earth News Fair 2016 – Belton, Texas

by Tammy Taylor~

A couple of months ago I was scanning my newsfeed and suddenly I stopped cold.  What do I see before my eyes? Could it be?  YES – the Mother Earth News Fair was coming to Texas!  I’d never been able to attend the MEN Fair before since I was under the mistaken impression that it was always held in the same location, far away from our ranch.  Imagine my utter glee at seeing that they hold fairs all around the US and now it was coming to central Texas, certainly within driving distance for RancherMan and me!  So we excitedly made plans to attend the two-day event.
