How To Bake Apple Pie In Single-Serve Canning Jars

by Tammy Taylor~

Recently RancherMan & I invited the folks over for supper.  It was going to be unseasonably warm and we had some grilling meat in the freezer.  I’d planned to roast some fresh vegetables with flavored olive oil for a delightful, quick & easy side. (be sure to read how I remade the leftover steak into a new meal!)  But my dad always comments that he thinks it’s cool that I typically make a dessert when they come over for supper, so I’m always sure to make something sweet too.  But what? Hummmm… I know!  I’d canned some apple pie filling and have several shining jars of it in the pantry.  But I’d hate to make a whole apple pie since there will only be 4 of us.  I wonder if I can make single-serving pies in canning jars…

I wanted apple pie for a dinner party I was hosting. I baked them up in individual wide-mouth canning jars. They were delicious and oh-so-cute! #TaylorMadeHomestead

Fast Food: Remaking Leftover Steak & Veggies

by Tammy Taylor~

Keeping the grocery budget low & eliminating waste is important in the Taylor household.  Oftentimes that means Planned Leftovers.  But sometimes it’s just making Fast Food by reworking leftovers into a brand new dish.

When it’s time to plan a meal I typically look at what I have to be used and build a meal around that.  That way there’s no food waste.  And if I’m using leftovers, the bulk of the meal has already been cooked.  All that’s left is to do is to think outside the box and use a little leftover magic.  Bibbidy-Bobbidy-BOO – let’s see what we can do!

What do you do with leftover steak? Come see my Fast-Food solution of making a new dinner of beef tips & noodles with those leftovers. #TaylorMadeHomestead

Cherry Pie Filling Recipe From Frozen or Canned Cherries

by Tammy Taylor~

The holidays are coming up y’all!  Every holiday gathering – whether Thanksgiving or Christmas – the non-negotiable dishes my family requests of the Taylor Household is that we bring  RancherMan’s Famous Green-Bean Casserole and my sweet, desserty no-cook Cherry Schtuff.  Now in the past I’d simply buy a can of cherry pie filling.  But I was often very disappointed at the abundance of filling and significant lack of actual cherry in those cans.  So these days I’ve found it’s much cheaper and oh-so-much-more delicious to make my own cherry pie filling.  I use either canned or frozen cherries and BOOM!

I've found it's cheaper and more delicious to make my own cherry pie filling using canned or frozen cherries. Plus there's way more actual CHERRIES! #TaylorMadeHomestead

5 Delicious Recipes To Preserve Fresh Apples

by Tammy Taylor~

Every year my aunt shares with us the abundance from her very productive apple tree.  She always goes through quite a bit of trouble to make sure I have all the apples I can possibly tote back home! But in the end RancherMan & I hauled back all we could fit into our small car.  I’ll not let any of them go to waste – I set out to preserve all those beautiful apples!  It was a lot of work but after some time in the kitchen preserving them we have plenty of apple deliciousness in the pantry.  Want to see some of the things I was able to do with them?

My aunt shared bushes of apples from her tree, so I sat out to preserve them. Come see my 5 favorite ways to preserve fresh apples. #TaylorMadeHomestead

Baked Apple Pie Tortilla Rolls

by Tammy Taylor~

Although almost most of our meals are cooked from scratch.  Sometimes off-the-homestead commitments results in me being unprepared for supper. But in all honesty since I use the cook-once, eat-twice method of cooking, I almost always have a main dish in the freezer for such occasions.

So I served thick charcoal-grilled ham slices, steamed carrots with butter & fresh rosemary and a serving of coleslaw.  The grilled ham slices were simply pulled from the freezer & the steamed carrots were remaining from yesterday’s meal and the coleslaw was in the fridge. So a delicious homemade supper was on the table in a flash. But when I take so many shortcuts for one meal I typically try to make a dessert for that handsome man of mine to make up for the meager offerings. It doesn’t help to make a quick supper if dessert takes lots of time.   I still needed a quick dessert option.  Hey, I know, I’ll use some homemade apple pie filling & a few tortillas to make baked apple pie tortilla rolls!

Need dessert in a flash? With apple pie filling & flour tortillas you can make baked apple pie tortilla rolls. No recipe is even needed! #TaylorMadeHomestead

Rehydrating & Enjoying Previously-Dehydrated Carrots

by Tammy Taylor~

Remember recently I ended up with a boatload of fresh carrots?  Now there was no way to consume that many carrots before they went bad.  So I was frantically sharing as many as I could with friends, family & neighbors but there were Still.  So.  Many.  Carrots.

So I dehydrated a huge bunch of them so I could enjoy them all winter long in our hot soups & stews. (you can read about dehydrating carrots here) These dehydrated carrots look awesome in my pantry in shining glass jars.  And they take no additional energy to store such as a refrigerator or freezer.  But I wanted to know how they would taste if I reconstituted them to enjoy as a veggie side dish.  Let’s check it out, shall we?

by Tammy Taylor~

Who doesn’t love dessert? We don’t have dessert every night of course but my handsome RancherMan does have a sweet tooth.  So it’s not unusual for me to have homemade brownies or even apple pie.  Or depending upon how hectic the day was I might take a shortcut and make something like homemade chocolate pudding.  A delicious dessert need not take lots of time or effort.  Heck one of our favorite desserts is strawberries & fresh whipped cream.  Dessert in a flash!
