Recipe: Rosemary Crackers with Olive Oil and Garlic

Fluffy, Delicious, Jalapeno/Cheese Yeast Bread Recipe

by Tammy Taylor~

When we recently traveled to west Texas to visit my aunt, she picked up a couple of loaves of our favorite jalapeno cheese bread for us to enjoy while we were there. I told her that every time we visit & enjoy that delicious bread I get the idea to come home & bake up bread with jalapenos & cheese.  But it’s just not the same because I’m usually making biscuits or flavored beer bread & not a fluffy yeast bread.

So recently when I was baking RancherMan his favorite sandwich bread I made one into a jalapeno cheese bread.  It was as simple as rolling it out, sprinkling chopped previously-frozen jalapenos from the freezer and some grated jalapeno muenster cheese given to us by a very sweet friend before rolling the dough into a loaf. But did it work?

Leftover Biscuit Dough? Make Cinnamon Rolls!

by Tammy Taylor~

I tried unsuccessfully for years to make delicious homemade biscuits for RancherMan.  When I say unsuccessfully, I mean they always turned out too dry & crumbly.  Or with not enough flavor.  Or just plain blahhhhh….  But I’ve finally stumbled upon the secret of delicious, moist, flavorful homemade biscuits!  I make them often for RancherMan and sometimes I put jalapenos & cheese in them too!

But recently I was serving him breakfast in bed for his birthday and he requested eggs, bacon, gravy and homemade biscuits.  As I rolled them out I found I had some dough leftover (as I always do!) Usually I’ll cut them into more biscuits and place them on a piece of aluminum foil to cook right alongside the others.  But I wonder if I could make something different with this small amount of leftover biscuit dough.  I wonder if I can sweeten it & make a few cinnamon rolls?  Hummm…

I take the scrap dough from homemade biscuits & make a small pan of cinnamon rolls. They bake right alongside my biscuits! #TaylorMadeHomestead

Planned leftovers: Chicken Tortilla Soup Recipe

by Tammy Taylor~

I’ve written before about how I love the Cook-Once, Eat-Twice method of cooking and of course its close relative the Planned Leftovers method too.  With Cook-Once Eat-Twice cooking you might cook several meatloaves or stuffed peppers so you can freeze it for the same entree later.  With Planned Leftovers you cook much more than you’ll eat at one meal so you can remake the leftovers into something completely new and delicious.  I wrote recently about cooking mucho quantities of pork roast to use for planned leftovers.  But today I’ll share the planned leftovers I enjoyed from a recent Slow Cooker Sticky Chicken I made.

Planned Leftovers: Use leftover chicken, a few dried out corn tortillas, a few cans of veggies to make delicious Chicken Tortilla Soup! #TaylorMadeHomestead

Planned Leftovers: Easy Slow-Cooker Pork Roast

by Tammy Taylor~

I’m a big fan of planned leftovers.  Similar to Cook-Once, Eat-Twice, planned-leftover cooking is where you purposely cook more than you plan on eating at one sitting so you can use the leftovers in different dishes later.  One of my favorite foods to use when I’m purposely planning for leftovers is pork roast.  I mean, who doesn’t love a delicious roast with carrots & potatoes for supper?  Then it’s easy to turn that leftover meat into other dishes for other suppers.  So I often cook a large enough roast to assure I have plenty leftover meat for future meals.

I like to cook with planned leftovers in mind. Recently I cooked up a huge pork roast in a slow cooker. See what I have planned. #TaylorMadeHomestead

Quick & Easy: Rich, Chocolaty Hot Cocoa Recipe

by Tammy Taylor~

Recently our grandbabies came to stay with us for a couple of days.  It was cold and dreary outside, so there was no playing outside for them.  So I thought we’d pop some popcorn, plug in a fun movie and enjoy some hot cocoa stirred with a peppermint stick.  But there’s no need to resort to the packets of powdered stuff!  Homemade cocoa is delicious & only involves cocoa, sugar and milk, flavored with vanilla with a handful of miniature marshmallows floating on top.   Believe me when I say it was a huge HIT with the grandbabies!

Top 10 Homesteading Posts of 2016!

by Tammy Taylor~

Whelp, here we are at the end of 2016.  What a great year it’s been! My veggie garden was screamingly successful this year.  And our homestead branched out with registered Angus heifers to augment the registered Hereford operation we currently have.   But it wasn’t without its darker moments too, including twin calves that died in calving and dealing with expensive yet crappy appliances.  But RancherMan & I tackled the successes and the trials together, side-by-side.  And that’s the way I always want it to be.

All this month I’ve been sharing with you the top homesteading posts on the blog for each year I’ve been writing.  I’ve linked to each of those years of Top-10 posts at the bottom of this post.  So if you haven’t already enjoyed ’em, well there ya go!

But without further adieu, here are the top 10 posts of the year for 2016:

Easy Quick bread Recipe: Basic Beer Bread

by Tammy Taylor~

I make beer bread all the time.  Sometimes I make it flavored but oftentimes it’s just a basic beer bread.  When I want it flavored I’ll use add-ins that I enjoy such as homemade basil pesto & sun-dried tomatoes with olive oil to make a Pesto-Flavored Bread.  Sometimes I’ll chop fresh rosemary from the garden & add cheddar cheese for a delicious  Rosemary/Cheddar-Flavored Bread. Or one of our faves, cheddar cheese & diced jalapenos.  I’ve even added brown sugar and cinnamon-spiced apples for a deserty kind of apple cinnamon bread.  It’s all delicious!  But it occurs to me I’ve never written a post about my basic beer bread recipe.  Mea culpa!

Sweet potatoes often go on sale and are cheap cheap, CHEAP.  But these unassuming veggies are a real power house of nutrition too.  Did you know you can use them to even add vitamins and fiber to a delicious healthier sweet treat??  Recently we had a guest author share her experiences of going through a complete month without eating any refined sugar at all.  But c’mon, they still love their sweets!  During her FINAL WEEK of the challenge, Ashley shared a ‘sweet surprise’ – chocolate brownies made with sweet potatoes!  Oh yeah, you have to see this…

So moist and delicious and completely free of refined sugar. Eat healthy but still enjoy your sweets #TaylorMadeHomestead

Double-Chocolate Banana Chunk Cookies

by Tammy Taylor~

Recently I was so excited that my aunt was coming to visit!  She agreed to stay with us at our house for a couple of days.  Now this woman is the ultimate hostess when we stay with her, so I wanted to assure her stay at Chez Taylor was as comfortable as possible.  I made a pork roast with veggies so it would be ready for her as soon as she arrived.  And I prepared for breakfast by making buttermilk biscuits beforehand and cooking up scrambled eggs in my silicone muffin pan so we could have grab-n-eat breakfast biscuits the next morning.  But c’mon, there needs to be something sweet (and CHOCOLATE) to snack on.  Because I said so, that’s why!

With the exception of the chocolate chips these cookies are sweetened with natural sugars of banana and honey. Fluffy, soft & chewy #TaylorMadeHomestead
