Fall-Back Friday: Reducing Food Waste

by Tammy Taylor~

TGIF y’all!  Fall is a glorious time of year, no??  The cooler temps, the changing colors, the Friday-Night Lights.  And ragweed is finally starting to loosen its grip on my face!  LOL.  So let’s celebrate Friday by allowing me to share a Fall-Back Friday post with you.  I’ll fall back into the blog archives and bring to the surface a post that’s proven very popular with my readers – food waste!  We all try to keep our food waste to a minimum.  But I wrote this piece for Mother Earth News and it addresses the problem of food waste and even offers some easy solutions for your own kitchen.  Check it out!

Cantaloupe Bread with Pecan Praline Glaze

by Tammy Taylor~

My veggie garden did very well this year.  Usually by the middle of July the searing sun has wiped out anything that struggled to remain during the hot summer months.  But even though it’s been hot this year my garden has provided garden deliciousness well into the fall months.  Yea!  One of the fall feast-or-famine goodies from the garden is cantaloupe.  Now I didn’t plant cantaloupe this year, the vines volunteered from my compost.   But I let them grow to become a living mulch for the rest of the garden.  RancherMan eats only a modest amount of fresh cantaloupe & although I love it, how’s a girl to eat that much by herself??  I wondered if there was something I could do with all the excess cantaloupe – as it turns out, there is!

If you have extra fresh cantaloupe, make this Sweet Cantaloupe Bread with Pecan Praline Glaze. DELICIOUS and so easy! #TaylorMadeHomestead

How To Make Pear Sauce With Fresh Pears

by Tammy Taylor~

A sweet neighbor offered to let RancherMan & me come harvest from their huge pear tree.  We took a ladder but only had to pick the sweet pears within our reach to bring  back about 75 lbs of fresh pears!  I’ve heard of people making something similar to applesauce but using pears instead – Pear Sauce!  I love applesauce so I figured I should give it a try.  Using my slow cooker it was super easy too, the procedure is the same as when I made applesauce.  Check it out!

Pear Sauce is much like applesauce but made with pears. After being given a supply of pears I gave pear sauce a try. Check it out! #TaylorMadeHomestead

Pear Relish Recipe – Sweet & Savory Come Together Beautifully!

by Tammy Taylor~

I’ve heard that pear relish is delicious but… I dunno. I mean sweet pears coupled with savory onions & bell peppers? And jalapenos? And MUSTARD? Blech! I’ve never been a fan of sweet & savory tastes together. But RancherMan asked me to get the recipe from a friend so I did. The instructions she sent were kind of vague and the recipe seemed to make quite a lot . What if all that food & work were wasted because, well… (see pears vs peppers & onions argument above!) So I made a small batch just to check it out. After sampling the results we found it delicious!  RancherMan has already asked me to make it again, this time a full batch #ifyouplease!

I'm not typically a fan of Sweet & Savory combinations but when you combine pears with onions, peppers and mustard? MAGIC! Check out my Pear Relish Recipe. #TaylorMadeHomestead

Taste of Fall: Fresh Pear Cake

by Tammy Taylor

It’s pear season y’all!  I’ve been allowed to harvest a few pears from trees around town so I’ve been making and canning lots of pears. From RancherMan’s favorite Pear Preserves as well as my fave: Pears in Light Syrup.  We’ll enjoy them all winter long and some jars could also end up in a few of our Homemade Christmas Baskets this year.  But a friend from church mentioned she had several pears that were given to her and she was going to make a pear cake with them.

I’d never even heard of pear cake, and I wasn’t sure I was even tempted by the thought.  But a couple of days later I met up with her and she said she’d made the cake and asked if we wanted to try it.  Hummm…  Pear cake??  Sure, I guess…   WOW – it was amazing, all cinnamon & spice fall-tasting deliciousness with soft chunks of pear. And RancherMan went crazy over it.  So of course I wanted to make it for him.  Thankfully she shared her recipe with me (thanks Sue!)

Taste of Fall: FRESH PEAR CAKE. Hummm... Pear cake?? It's delicious, all pear/cinnamon fall tasting. A great way to use this season's pears #TaylorMadeHomestead

Apple Pie Made With Home-Canned Apples

by Tammy Taylor

Recently I wrote about all the things I was able to make and preserve using the apples my aunt shared with me from her very prolific backyard apple tree.  I of course made and canned apple pie filling but also applesauce, both plain and cinnamon/vanilla flavored and dehydrated crispy cinnamon/sugar apple slices.  But now it’s time to put that apple pie filling to the test – let’s see what kind of convenience food I’ve been able to provide for the supper table.

Well, we’re almost at the end of our Fresh Apple Series where I share various things I’ve been able to preserve using fresh apples in the peak of their season.  And what a series it’s been!   I’ve of course made Slow-Cooker Applesauce with many of the apples and even made and canned some of that applesauce into Cinnamon-Vanilla Flavored Applesauce.  I’ve also made and canned Apple Pie Filling for quick homemade pies and then one of RancherMan’s favorites – I dehydrated some of those delicious apples into crispy Cinnamon/Sugar Apple Chips.  But we’re not done yet, oh no!  Those apples still have deliciousness to share with our family.   Today I’m sharing how I preserved my Homemade Apple Cider.

Canning Recipe: Homemade Cinnamon-Vanilla Applesauce

Remember my aunt shared with me several bushels of sweet ripe apples from her backyard tree?  Well y’all, I’m still working on getting all of those delicious apples preserved.  One of my easiest go-to things to do with lots of fresh apples is to use my slow cooker to make homemade applesauce.  I take those apples that might be not quite right for eating fresh or pretty enough for making apple pie filling and turn them into applesauce.  You know the ones, those beautiful apples that maybe have a wind-fall bruise or small bird peck that needs to be cut out – none of that matters if I’m making applesauce!  I like to use plain unsweetened applesauce as a delicious snack and also as a replacement for some of the oil I use when baking.  But I have a LOT of applesauce and I’m thinking about maybe using some of it for an even sweeter treat – Cinnamon-Vanilla flavored applesauce.  It couldn’t be easier, check it out!

HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE is super easy, and I've made some of it into extra-special Cinnamon-Vanilla Applesauce. I've canned it to enjoy all winter #TaylorMadeHomestead
