Simple Gluten Free Sweetened Condensed Milk Recipe

by Texas Homesteader ~

Did you know you can make your own gluten-free sweetened condensed milk in literally minutes?? I haven’t actually purchased an expensive can of this milk in years once I found out how easy it is to make myself.

It's shocking how easy it is to make sweetened condensed milk. In our area a can of the name-brand stuff sells for about $3.49. CRAZY! #TexasHomesteader

Simple Ingredients For Sweetened Condensed Milk

To make homemade sweetened condensed milk I need only a few basic ingredients:

Homemade sweetened condensed milk - butter, sugar and powdered milk. #TexasHomesteader

      • Powdered milk

      • Sugar

      • Butter

      • Vanilla

      • Boiling water

See what I mean? Simple ingredients I already have in my kitchen!

How To Make Sweetened Condensed Milk

Here’s what I did to make my own sweetened condensed milk:

I first measured out all my ingredients and got them all ready.

Add water into a glass measuring cup and heat it in the microwave until it starts to bubble. (no need to boil – you’re just melting butter with this water)

Add butter to the hot liquid and stir to allow the butter to melt into the water.

Pour mixture into a blender – I use my * Ninja blender.

(I polled my Facebook followers several weeks ago & the Ninja was very highly recommended so I bought one for myself – it does not disappoint!)

I absolutely love my Ninja blender! #TexasHomesteader

Since I’m only making a can’s worth of sweetened condensed milk I’m using the smaller Ninja blender unit.

Add powdered milk, sugar and vanilla into the Ninja container with the hot liquid. Then first pulse, then blend on high for about 20 seconds until it’s smooth and creamy.

Seconds Later – DONE!

Can you even believe how quickly that went?? I know I can’t.

I mean I’m not lazy in the kitchen but…

OK yes let’s be honest, I’m ALWAYS looking for shortcuts in the kitchen. And any quick, easy and inexpensive shortcut I come across is a winner in my book!

To me it’s shocking how easy it is to make this sweetened condensed milk. And yet in our area a single can of the name-brand stuff sells for about $3.49.

CRAZY!

Benefits of Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk

I don’t use sweetened condensed milk often but it’s sometimes an ingredient in a family favorite recipe. So I now make it myself!

Pride – I feel pretty empowered that I’m able to provide for my family without a trip to the grocery store.

Inexpensive – It’s significantly less expensive than the purchased counterpart and that makes my budget happy.

Less Chemicals – It’s made without the odd-sounding ingredients you typically see on commercial food labels.

Eco Friendly – And probably most importantly to me – it’s environmentally friendly with less landfill-bound trash.

Desserts Require Sweetened Condensed Milk

A couple of my favorite desserts that require sweetened condensed milk:

Lemon Icebox Pie – A delicious cool summertime dessert.

No-Bake Cherry Fluff Dessert. – A family favorite for the holidays

This no-cook dessert stirs together in minutes. Cherry pie filling, Cool whip, crushed pineapple and sweetened condensed milk. #TexasHomesteader

(Since I had to drain a can of pineapple for my cherry dessert recipe I used that juice in place of the water to add a little pineapple flavor punch for my recipe.)

I’ve only needed to use this milk recipe in those two recipes. But it’s worked beautifully for me Every. Single. Time.

So I have no doubt it’ll work fantabulously in your recipe too.

This homemade sweetened condensed milk sounds great! I think substituting water for the pineapple juice is smart. Thanks for sharing your recipe!

I’m in the same boat, Liz. I only need it for special recipes I make during the holidays but I hate to buy it. Not only is is expensive but by making it myself I can eliminate one more tin can from my recycling efforts. PRE-cycling is something that’s important to me, so this is a win/win for our Household! ~TxH~

This is so cool. I try to only use fresh ingredients, and there are some things I did not realize I could get around. I don’t like eating things that you can’t pronounce. I am pinning this so that I have it for future reference! Thanks.

Is there any reason that this could not be home canned? I would sure like to try that.

Great idea! I’m going to give this one a try.
About the extra pineapple juice: I use crushed pineapple in quick breads. My DH loves to drink the juice but most times I have more than he can drink. Solution: I pour the juice (pulp and all) in ice cube trays and freeze it. When frozen I remove the cubes and store them in zip-lock freezer bags in the freezer. When the hot weather hits, we add a few to a glass of water for a refreshing and cool drink.
Nothing is wasted at our house, if possible.
But I’m with you, I hate adding the cans to the landfills.
Happy Holiday and thanks for the great recipe for the milk.

Although I am still perfecting it, I make a coconut version with coconut milk & coconut extract (add towards the very end because the extract does not like heat). I use it mostly for a frozen Ambrosia recipe and DIY Mounds & Almond Joy. We never really liked coconut before this.

I’m like you– if I can MYO anything… I try it. I have recipes – not committed to memory– but many, I collect and write down. I say write down because in a true emergency– I won’t have access to Pinterest or the Internet…sweeten condensed milk is a must! LOL!!!!
I’m like you… I live in the country, distance, convenience and time are ALL MONEY savers if I can make my own.
I’m going to give this a try for sure. 😉

I guess I’m a little late to the game Colleen – although I’ve been making this sweetened condensed milk for years, I remember the “eureka” moment when I figured out how ridiculously easy it was to make. I always just assumed this was an expensive item I’d need to buy whenever a recipe warranted it. I love your ‘Miracle Pan Release’ formula too. I typically shy away from the sprays and this would be the perfect substitution. Thanks for sharing! ~TxH~

Gosh, can’t remember when I last bought a can of this stuff at the store, as I have always made my own for years now. I’m like you; why buy when it’s so easy to make.

If interested I have a recipe that I will share which is called; ‘Miracle pan Release.’
    1/2 cup Crisco solid shortening
    1/2 cup Vegetable Oil
    1/2 cup flour
Whip ingredients together and store in air-tight container and store in refrigerator. To Use: Wipe a thin layer or use pasty brush and evenly coat bottom and sides of baking pans. I use this on my waffle iron – my bundt pans, etc.
(you can make in amount, just use Equal amounts of all 3 ingredients)
