Due to a recent surgery I needed a way to clean my hair for several days without getting it wet. I’ve seen dry shampoo in the stores for several years now but you know me – I wanna make it myself for environmental, health & budget reasons! I’ve used various methods before such as sprinkling baby powder in my hair & combing it through but I didn’t like the metallic sheen it seemed to leave in my hair afterward.
But I’ve stumbled on the magical formula that works just right for me! I’d think this dry shampoo formula would be great for camping or hiking too. It contains only inexpensive lightweight ingredients.
With a few simple pantry staples (yes indeed, cocoa IS a non-negotiable pantry staple here on the ranch!) I start by combining equal parts of cornstarch & baking soda. Today I used 1/4 cup each & I added about 2-1/2 tablespoons of cocoa for my medium-brown hair color. You can adjust the amount of added cocoa for your own hair color. Or leave it out completely if your hair is very light or blonde. I feel the cocoa just adds a nice matte finish and eliminates any white powdery residue showing in my brown hair.
This mixture can be messy to apply since a tiny bit of powder tends to go airborne during application, although not near as much when using my makeup brush for application as it would trying to sprinkle it or apply with my fingers. Still I prefer to sit on my back porch to apply the dry shampoo. It’s just much less mess for me to deal with that way and really, who doesn’t like LESS MESS??
You want to apply only what you need so you don’t have tons of powder to brush out of your hair afterward. And you want it to hit the roots of your hair where the highest concentration of oil will be.
So here’s how I apply it: I first make a front-to-back part in my hair, dip the brush lightly into the mix, tap off the excess & brush onto the roots of my hair at the part starting at the back & working toward my face with the brush. By starting the brush at the back it helps assure the bulk of the powder will end up at the back of my head to be brushed down through my hair to remove additional oil.
Then I make another part in my hair and repeat until I’ve gone the full distance across. Now I simply work the powder through with my fingertips. I give it a couple of minutes to soak up some oil and then brush it out. The excess oil clings to the powder and is brushed away! I like to thoroughly brush my hair again about 5 minutes later. It always seems there’s just a little more powder remaining after the first brushing. Now I’m good to go!
After applying my dry shampoo I could smell a very subtle hint of cocoa remaining. But RancherMan said he detected no scent at all unless he was purposely sniffing my hair. ‘Sniffing my hair’? OOKAYYYYY…. LOL
As I mentioned this solved my problem after a surgery when there was really not much physical activity for me. And since you brush it out of your hair I’m assuming precious little of the product remains afterward. But I wonder how it would hold up if you were exercising and sweating? If anyone has any experience I’d love to hear it.
I’d think this would also be a great light-weight item to use for camping.
I’m pretty pleased at how well this worked using items I already had in my pantry. I’ve finally found my perfect yet inexpensive dry shampoo option!
