Homestead Hack: Table Salt & Pepper Combination

by Texas Homesteader

When cooking or serving our food I always try to go easy on the salt, but we both like lots of pepper.

LOTS of pepper!

So I often lightly salt our food and then heavily pepper it. The ratio I use is pretty consistent.

One day as I was peeling & seasoning a hard-boiled egg. I pulled out the salt and watched carefully for just a few grains to be sprinkled on the egg so it wouldn’t be over salted, then got the pepper and finished the seasoning with a hefty covering of pepper.

Then I got to wondering, since my seasoning ratio is always the same, I wonder…

HOMESTEAD HACK: Since the ratio of my salt & pepper is always the same, can I streamline simple seasoning tasks? YES! #TexasHomesteader

RancherMan’s mentioned a few times recently how much he loves that I’ve done this, so I wanted to share this Homestead Hack with you today.

I obtained a small Tupperware shaker and mixed my standard ratio of salt & pepper in it.  BOOM!

HOMESTEAD HACK: Since the ratio of my salt & pepper is always the same, can I streamline simple seasoning tasks? YES! #TexasHomesteader

Now whether RancherMan is making a tuna-salad sandwich or I’m seasoning a can of veggies for supper, this one shaker is all we need to retrieve and use to perfectly season our food with salt & pepper.

Of course I still have my shaker of salt and the other shaker of pepper in the cabinet should they be necessary. But many times this does the work of both shakers at one time!

Plus it’s easy automatic portion control for those occasional over-salting when we’re trying to cut back on salt (cough, RancherMan, cough…)

It depends on how you personally salt/pepper your food, Laurel. Some people like more salt than pepper (not me). Others like it about 50/50 (again, not me) Still others like a little salt and DOUBLE the pepper (jumps up & down waving hand – Me, Me, ME!) So for our ratio it’s 1 part salt to 2 parts pepper. But again, your ratio could very well be different. Think about how many shakes of salt you add to your food vs how many shakes of pepper, then use that ratio to make your own personalized salt/pepper combination. ~TxH~

Great idea. I can’t stand pepper though so it wouldn’t work for me. Thanks again, again for joining with Tuesday Afternoon at a Spirit of Simplicity today.

I have the same S&P shakers :} They where a pretty hot item back in the day. Clever idea mixing the salt and the pepper into one shaker. Really makes sense. You’re so clever. Don’t know why I didn’t think of that, as I mix up my seasonings to use on my burgers, chicken, etc but just never thought of mixing the pepper and salt together.
My French Fry seasoning I even have in it’s own separate shaker.
Have an enjoyable day along with a wonderful evening.

My aunt gifted me with that shaker, Colleen, I believe it was originally my grandmother’s – I love it. This combined salt/pepper shaker is the one I bring out to the table during our mealtimes.
