How To Make A Frozen Watermelon Smoothie (or Add Rum For A Daiquiri!)

by Texas Homesteader ~

A frozen watermelon daiquiri is cold, sweet refreshment on a hot summer’s day. You can leave out the rum for a watermelon smoothie that the whole family can enjoy!

What To Make With Seedless Watermelon?

Several weeks ago I bought a seedless watermelon. But after a few days we got tired of eating it fresh.

A friend of mine suggested cutting it into chunks and freezing it.

She said I could blend it up with a small amount of sugar into a cool watermelon slushie the whole family could enjoy on a hot summer day.

Or you can add rum to make a frozen daiquiri for a flavorful adult cold treat.

I had to admit that putting that watermelon in the freezer would certainly solve the ‘must eat it now’ problem I was having!

I was intrigued with the idea of a watermelon daiquiri so I decided to give it a shot.

HA!! I said ‘give it a shot’! See what I did there??!

How To Freeze Watermelon

I cut the seedless watermelon into about ½” – 1″ chunks. Then I placed the chunks on a flat baking sheet and placed it in the freezer for a couple of hours.

After that time I removed the semi-frozen chunks and slipped them into a freezer bag, added a label and returned them to the freezer.

This way I kept all of those watermelon pieces from freezing into one hard blob.

(taps top of head smugly) Not just a hat rack, my friends!

Stay Cool With Chilled Foods On Hot Days

Several days later after a particularly hot day in the pastures I just couldn’t face cooking supper in the kitchen. So RancherMan suggested that he charcoal grill our supper outside.

I immediately planned on sides of chilled Pasta Salad  seasoned with my favorite herb bombs, some sliced cold boiled eggs and thick slices of fresh garden tomatoes.

This simple cold pasta salad is a delicious side dish when the temperatures are hot. #TexasHomesteader

Supper would come together fast and we’d enjoy a cooling meal on a hot Texas summer day.

Hot Days Call For Cool Sweet Treats

But RancherMan reminded me of that frozen watermelon in our freezer. Hey, while we’re hanging out on the back porch by the grill we might as well be sipping a delicious cold drink! I couldn’t agree with him more.

So we put our heads together to figure out a daiquiri recipe that would delight our taste buds.

Making A Frozen Watermelon Daiquiri

We needed this frozen watermelon to be blended completely smooth and thank goodness we have the *Ninja blender (have I mentioned lately how much I LOVE this thing??!!)

We love the Ninja blender, especially for blending frozen fruit. #TexasHomesteader

He pulled out the blender and filled it with the ingredients for our frozen watermelon daiquiris:

      • 5-6 cups of frozen watermelon chunks

      • 1/2 cup sugar

      • 1/2 cup Captain Morgan Spiced Rum

We pressed the button and watched as the frozen chunks whirred into a smooth creamy consistency.

RancherMan brought out a couple of heavy glass tumblers and poured the frozen watermelon daiquiri into them.

The thick, sweet-smelling daiquiri was sure tempting my taste buds let me tell ya!

I brought out my *stainless steel smoothie straw (yes, I hate plastic!!  LOL) and we went in for a taste…

Delicious, Cold Fruit-Based Daiquiri Treat

DELICIOUS! The texture was perfect, the rum wasn’t too strong and the drink was sweet without being too sweet

We took those cold drinks out to the patio where we reclined in our chairs to watch the sunset & enjoy the wafting aroma of chicken cooking on the grill as we sipped our watermelon deliciousness.

Aaaaaahhhh….  now THIS is the life!

I love that we were able to salvage all that sweet watermelon. And also that we could turn it into a delicious daiquiri treat for ourselves.

As I mentioned before, you can omit the alcohol and make delicious healthy smoothies if desired. Then you’d have sweet cold refreshment the whole family could enjoy!

Here’s how we made ours:
